The Study of Regeneration of the Microvilli after Rabbit Corneal Epithelial Cell Damage

Abstract
The rabbit corneal epitheliums were damaged by diathermy and cryo-application. The wound helaing process and regeneration of microvilli of the corneal epithelium were studied with the electron microscope. The results were as follows.
1) The wound healing was initiated by the sliding of the corneal epithelium near the damaged area.
2) The sliding cells containing abundant glycogen and fine fibrils were light in color and the surface was relatively smooth in early stage but later many vermiform ridges were appeared on the cell surface and the cells became dark in color. In
early
stage, definite intercellular space was noted between the sliding cells but the space was narrowed and the epithelial cells were colsely attached with each other later.
3) The size and shape of the vermiform ridges were irregular in early stage, the vermiform ridges on the upper surface of the superficial cells were changed into normal microvilli and the vermiform ridges met with the below formed desmosomes
later.
4) There are no conspicuous difference in the wound healing processes and the appearance of the microvilli between diathermy and cryo-application group.
